Peasant Magic Season V: October 26

Season V is a-rolling!

The first tournament of season V was a success, 19 players attended and they brought a wide variety of decks with them. Congratulations to Arjan for taking the win!

The metagame of this tournament was as said very, very diverse and some decks I personally considered to be in the category of has-beens. Kudos to Henri for bringing Dr. Teeth (Psychatog's pet name, seriously every time I see this card I'm singing 'Calling Dr. Love' by Kiss but replacing the Love with teeth :P)and posting a good result with it. In the end he couldn't quite cope with High Tide. In the final game I saw Henri had all the tools he would theoretically want, scepter-counterspell, a hindering touch and plenty of mana, however, a well-timed early frost caused Henri to cast the Touch to signal Allard he knew he had lost the game. Speaking of High Tide, I loved seeing this take on storm, nice.

Another two decks I didn't expect to be posting a good result these days were the Affinity decks, how we live and learn... :) By the by, I love how these two decks, which on paper have such similar strategies, can still be so different.

Special attention obviously has to go to the U/B the Rack deck wielded by Arjan. I am pleased to see a deck with a heavy discard package and black's solid removal suite taking the night (I played black for the very same reason, so I can say that at least I had an inkling of a good idea, right? Right...?:P). To be honest I think that we can expect a variety of decks supported by the controlling power offered by discard and heavy removal in the future.

The top 8 was complemented by two decks both running its own kind of annoying little critter ;) On one hand we had the very well known Faeries buzzing around everyone's head and needle-pricking them to death, on the other hand Martijn's soul sisters let his life total reach for the heavens (Gods, why didn't I play mass removal...)

All in all, a good tournament so sayeth Johan and I! Lots of peepz and cool decks. Looking forward to next month!

Siebe out!

Invitational Tournament Budget Season IV

And when the smoke cleared a storm rose?!

Congratulations to Gijsbert for stealing the trophy from under everyone's nose. Kind of a cool story, since he only heard he could join the invitational two days prior to the tournament day and still 3-0'd both formats (Pauper as well as Peasant was played).

Furthermore we saw during the invitational that a significant number of players picked up the locus lands to render their endgame mana supply neigh infinite! Especially in mirror situations this led to stupid situations: tap a land, gain 8 mana :P

Top8 Decklists 4th Peasant Grand Prix Ingolstadt

More Peasant is more better!

Our good friends in Ingolstadt, Germany, have organized another Peasant tournament on July 21st. With 19 players attending it was once more a smashing success!

When we look at the top 8 we see a highly diverse metagame, with several new renditions of very familiar archetypes, such as MBC, MBA and tortured existence. Additionally, a couple of decks popped up that look really interesting, but which I was unfamiliar with, i.e. Canadian Threshold, Spielplatz mit Rutsche (playground with slide) and (the aptly dubbed) OP Delver is OP. But ultimately, the (in my opinion) often underestimated brute force of those tree-hugging, earth-loving, pointy eared freaks (cookies for the first one to recognize the reference) took home the victory in one gracious swipe of elven steel. Congratulations to Andreas H for appreciating the joy of emptying your hand on turn 2 or 3 and smashing your opponent's face in!

Judgment Day!

#Loving all the positive vibes going on here!

Today is a big day, the final tournament of this year's budget league. We'll be playing three rounds of pauper and three rounds of peasant. This nicely reflects the setup of the past season, where we also played both formats.

I'm going to take a blue delver deck to the pauper rounds and for peasant I'll pick up our 'baby', our precious :P For us this deck tells the story of peasant, that you can create a tier 1 deck in this format by constant tuning, tweaking and testing. Our W/u blinkpost deck once started as W/G/U, then got red added, subsequently had green removed from it, red turned to black, black got removed, blue got tuned down until it was basically a white deck with mulldrifters :P I'm really pumped to play it again today and I hope to post the result with the deck that it deserves!

Decklists will follow suit!

No more radio silence! Peasant lives!

Hello everyone! The rumours are true, this site has been taken over by new writers. First of all: Hennink thank you for all this time maintaining this blog! We will try and make it shine as in the old days!

So new writers eh? Who are we? We are two avid Peasant players and have been from the start of Peasant in Groningen: Siebe van der Veer and Johan Rots. We will be successing Martijn Hennink and Maarten Jacobs as organizers of the Peasant magic competition in Groningen.

Why us? We saw the numbers of players attending Peasant tournaments declining and this got us worried. Now as we see ourselves among the more passionate Peasant players, we felt the need to step up and try to take care of that which we cherish. After deliberation with Maarten, we jointly decided to let the two of us give it a go.

What can you expect? We intend to update this blog regularly, with tournament results, decklists and the occasional food for thought concerning Peasant magic. With this we will try to bring you a reliable platform for this format.

Additionally, we left four Peasant decks at our local FNM store, De Purperen Draak. With these decks, available for everyone interested, we would like to attract new(er) Peasant magic players. These decks have a sideboard, so can also be used at tournaments. The decks are proactive, fun to play but still competitive. You can choose from a Green Red aggro deck with monsters and burn, a monoblack aggro control deck with discard and evasion, a Blue Red deck based on Burning Vengeance with graveyard utility and a White soldiers deck.

So if you get the chance go check them out at De Purperen Draak.

Hope to see you soon at a Peasant tournament or on this blog!

Radio Silence

Hello everyone, What has happened? Well, a lot. The reason I haven't been updating this blog for the past half year is that I haven't been really involved with Peasant Magic for the past half year. The reason for that, of course, is that I am now a father. At first I thought I would miss out on only a tournament or two, but as time went by, I realized I had more hobbies than a budding father could reasonably pursue (well, more than I could reasonably pursue anyway). When deciding what hobbies I wanted to keep, tournament Magic, and with it updating this blog, fell by the wayside. I have, however, heard, as of yet unconfirmed rumours that this site will be taken over by a new writer. I have always enjoyed chronicling our Peasant achievements, and even though it's for all the right reasons, saying a definitive goodbye to this blog would still sadden me, so let's hope these rumours are true! Sincerely, Hennink.

Right, time for some updates. This one has been a long time coming, but I finally made some time to put these lists online. They are from the November 2011 tournament in Ingolstadt, a German city where they play with the same banlist as we do. Even though this tournament was from before we banned Thopter Foundry and unbanned the artifact lands, I think there are some fun lists in there. Enjoy!
